Earls Court Removals Health and Safety Policy

Earls Court Removals is committed to providing removal and relocation services that protect the health, safety and welfare of our employees, customers, contractors and the general public. We recognise our responsibilities under applicable health and safety legislation and industry best practice, and we aim to prevent injury, ill health and property damage throughout every stage of our services.

Policy Aims and Objectives

The objective of this Health and Safety Policy is to ensure that all removal and related activities are planned, managed and carried out safely. We will provide appropriate resources to maintain safe systems of work for domestic moves, commercial relocations, packing, loading, transport and storage. Our aim is to continually improve our safety performance while delivering efficient and reliable removals across our operating areas.

Management Responsibilities

Senior management holds overall responsibility for health and safety within Earls Court Removals. Management will:

Ensure that this policy is implemented, monitored and reviewed on a regular basis. Provide a safe working environment, including vehicles, equipment and materials that are suitable, well maintained and used correctly. Identify and assess risks associated with moving, lifting, transporting and storing household and commercial goods. Put in place clear procedures and safe systems of work to control identified risks. Provide appropriate information, instruction, supervision and training for all employees so that they can work safely and competently. Promote a positive safety culture in which health and safety is integral to day-to-day operations.

Employee Responsibilities

All employees, including drivers, porters, packers and administrative staff, have a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. Employees must:

Follow all safety procedures, instructions and guidance provided by the company. Use equipment, tools, vehicles and protective gear correctly and report any defects immediately. Co-operate fully with management in implementing this policy and any associated procedures. Report accidents, near misses, hazards and unsafe conditions as soon as possible. Refrain from horseplay or unsafe behaviour that could put themselves or others at risk.

Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices

Earls Court Removals will carry out risk assessments for typical removal tasks and any higher-risk activities. These assessments will consider hazards such as manual handling, working in confined spaces, use of lifting aids, traffic movement, loading and unloading, access to properties and environmental conditions. The results are used to develop safe working practices including:

Planning routes and access in advance of each move. Ensuring adequate staffing and supervision for large or complex removals. Using suitable equipment such as sack trucks, trolleys, furniture blankets, straps and ramps. Implementing safe loading and unloading procedures to prevent falls, collisions and load shifts. Controlling risks from working on or near roads, driveways, loading bays and entrances.

Manual Handling and Use of Equipment

Manual handling is a core element of removal work and requires particular attention. We are committed to reducing the risk of musculoskeletal injuries by:

Assessing loads and the surrounding environment before lifting or carrying. Avoiding manual lifting where mechanical aids or alternative methods can be used. Training staff in safe lifting techniques, team handling and use of handling equipment. Setting limits on individual lifting where appropriate and encouraging team lifts for heavy or bulky items. Maintaining handling equipment in safe working order, with regular inspections and servicing.

Vehicles, Driving and Transport Safety

Our vehicles are central to our services and are managed to ensure safety on the road and at customer locations. Earls Court Removals will:

Keep vehicles regularly serviced, inspected and roadworthy, including tyres, lights and securing points. Ensure drivers hold valid licences, are medically fit and are competent for the size and type of vehicle operated. Provide guidance on safe driving practices, route planning, loading limits and securing loads. Promote safe parking and unloading, with attention to pedestrians, neighbouring properties and traffic flow. Require drivers to comply with road traffic laws and company procedures at all times.

Training, Information and Supervision

We recognise that effective training is essential for a safe removal service. All employees receive appropriate induction and ongoing training in areas such as:

General health and safety awareness and emergency procedures. Manual handling, use of lifting aids and safe packing techniques. Safe loading, unloading and securing of loads in vehicles. Use of personal protective equipment where required. Reporting of accidents, incidents and hazards.

Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for ensuring that procedures are followed on site and that less experienced staff are supported and monitored.

Customer, Contractor and Public Safety

Earls Court Removals takes reasonable steps to protect customers, contractors and members of the public during our operations. This includes:

Planning work to minimise disruption at collection and delivery addresses. Using clear communication with customers about access, parking, pets and children during loading and unloading. Marking or controlling work areas where possible to reduce the risk of trips, falls or collisions. Co-ordinating with any other contractors present at a property to manage shared risks.

Accident Reporting and Emergency Arrangements

All accidents, incidents, injuries and near misses are to be reported promptly to management. We will investigate where necessary to identify root causes and implement corrective actions. First aid arrangements are made appropriate to the nature and scale of our activities, and staff are instructed on what to do in the event of injury, fire, traffic incident or other emergency while on the road or at a customer site.

Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement

This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed regularly and updated when there are significant changes in legislation, company operations or identified risks. We monitor performance through incident reports, vehicle records, staff feedback and site observations. Lessons learned from any accidents, near misses or customer feedback are used to refine procedures and training so that we can continually improve the safety and reliability of our removal services.

Policy Communication and Implementation

This policy is communicated to all employees and is made available to customers and other interested parties on request. Implementation of the policy is a shared responsibility, and every member of the Earls Court Removals team is expected to contribute to a safe working environment. Compliance with this policy forms part of our commitment to delivering professional, responsible and trustworthy removal services throughout our service area.
